St. Patrick’s College would like to extend its sincere sympathies to the family of Tony Mc Garry who passed away on March 19th, 2025.
Tony joined the teaching staff of our school in 1966 as an Irish and general subjects teacher. He was appointed Deputy Principal in 1988 and on the retirement of Mr. Padraic King, became Principal of our school. Tony always spoke fondly of the students and was very proud of the success of our students and the College in general, particularly in the Leaving Cert examinations. As part of the management of the school, Tony encouraged many extra-curricular activities which also benefited our students’ development.
Tony was also well known throughout the west of Ireland for his involvement with ‘The Humbert International Summer School’. This project brought many differing voices together with the aim of promoting peace and reconciliation on the island of Ireland. There was also a focus on the connection between the west of Ireland and its European historical ties through General Humbert. The school also helped to promote Killala as a tourist destination of historical importance.
In his retirement, Tony was a great friend to the College. He regularly volunteered with mock interviews and helped many students acquire summer Gaeltacht scholarships. His love of the Irish language was immense. Bhí Tony inspioráideach maidir leis an teanga agus spreag sé a lán daltaí chun an Ghaeilge a chur chun cinn agus a úsáid.
Reposing at Lynn’s Funeral Home, Killala, (F26 T854) on Friday 21st from 5pm to 7pm. Funeral will arrive to St Patrick’s Church, Killala, on Saturday for Requiem mass at 2pm , followed by burial in Killala Cemetery. Family flowers only please, donations in lieu to Mayo Hospice.
