The St. Patrick’s College Lacken Cross Boys Gaelic football team captured their second cup of the year after overcoming Rossport in their U16 County Final recently. Earlier this year the team defeated Charlestown in the U15 County Final to win the O’ Haire Cup. The team also have a first and 2nd year county final coming up on the 8th of May.
A match in Glenamoy is always going to be affected by the wind. Captain TJ Murphy, won the toss he elected to play against the breeze. Lacken had an ideal start and after great work from Finn and Ciaran from the throw in, they delivered a great ball into Fionnán who turned his man and blasted the ball to the back of the net.
This set the tempo for the game. Great long kick outs from Sean Mc Andrew against the breeze got Lacken out of their own half. They were very solid at the back with strong defending from Tony Carden, Sean Gildea and Shane Donohoe. The half back line of Shane Loughney John Joe Nealon and Joe Bourke drove forward at every opportunity.
Shane Loughney chipped with two points and John Joe Nealon with one. Jordan Clarke, TJ Murphy and Paddy Gough, Ronan Murphy and Cormac Jackson worked tirelessly, when Lacken didn’t have the ball.
Two points from Cormac Jackson and another two from TJ Murphy along with another one from Jordan Clarke saw Lacken finishing out the game out in style winning comfortably in the end. Their Winter training with past Mayo player and minor All Ireland winning captain Michael Fitzmaurice showed out in the end.
A big thank you to Ms. Herbert, Declan Caulfield, Mr. Kissane, Michael Fitzmaurice and Johnny Lavin. Onwards and upwards for this team.
